| Hey Zam, perhaps Gareth Penn could help me in my nursing research as to what sort of medical diagnosis a person such as his POI would have? Would he consider such a Thought Disorder or perhaps just Narcissism (Personality Disorder) from his research? Obviously a mood disorder would be beyond this discussion for it doesn't seem possible to determine this in this forum.
Thanks

Dear Zam,
This is in response to a snide posting which you forwarded to me a while ago from a pseudonymous individual claiming 1) that the University of California has no record of any degree awarded to me; 2) that I did not reside at 1708 Lincoln Street in Berkeley during the period 1969-1970 but that one Joel Jaffe did; and 3) that I was working on TIMES 17 in the 1970s. I attach a letter from the Berkeley registrar’s office informing the reader of the degrees I earned at that institution; obviously, the first claim is baloney. Also attached is a copy of the cover of a reverse telephone directory published by Pacific Telephone in February 1970 and the page in that directory on which I am listed at 1708 Lincoln at that time, halfway through academic year 1969-1970. The issue of February 1969 shows Joel Jaffe at that address. I never met him, but he was obviously my predecessor. The regular telephone directory for Oakland-Berkeley was published annually in June; I am not listed in that directory at 1708 Lincoln until June 1970, having moved to that address later in the summer of 1969. Pat Miller, wife of Ray (1707A), was a teacher at Continuation HS in Vallejo and a colleague of Mary Ann’s. She alerted us in the summer of 1969 to the impending vacancy at 1708 Lincoln, and we pounced on it, since we were renting a one-bedroom flat on Webster Street for $125 a month and 1708 Lincoln, a three-bedroom house with a garage, was available for $150. To seal the deal, we even ingratiated ourselves with the landlady (J.D. Moran, 1710) by taking a kitten from the latest litter of her calico, Spotty. At all events, the contention that I did not reside at 1708 Lincoln in 1969-1970 is also obviously baloney. The third slice of baloney is the statement that the book I worked on in the 1970s was TIMES 17. My big writing project at that time was a David and Goliath story pitting a self-employed naturalist named Ted Walker against the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries over the issue of the migratory behavior of the California gray whale. The BCF interpretation of things was designed to support a return to commercial hunting of this species, which was placed under the protection of an international treaty in 1937 because it had been hunted to near-extinction. The BCF got its data from commercial whalers, who used a special scientific permit issued by the BCF to kill hundreds of gray whales off the Golden Gate and make them into dog food and shoe polish. Walker got his data from observing living whales in their natural setting, the lagoons of Baja California; hence my title In vivo veritas (it should be apparent that I sided with Walker). The most dramatic chapter had to do with a private but BCF-promoted expedition to Scammon’s Lagoon, Baja California, in February 1967, in which a Seattle cardiologist used a fleet of surface craft and no fewer than two aircraft to kill ten nursing whale cows by injecting them with Dilaudid by means of explosive syringes implanted with a shotgun fired by a gunner in a helicopter, incidentally killing their calves as well, who died of starvation. The purpose of killing the whales was to obtain blood and urine samples, but nine of the animals killed sank to the bottom before samples could be taken. A BCF scientist was also present, firing numbered shotgun slugs into every whale in sight, with the intention of recovering the slugs when the whales were taken by onshore whaling companies in San Pablo, California (the procedure was supposed to analogize bird-banding). This incident prompted a cryptic reproof signed by five prominent zoologists and published on the letters page of Science, but it got not one droplet of ink in the news media. One of the more interesting aspects of the story is that this bloody fiasco was funded by the National Geographic, whose mission statement does not include paying money for the slaughter of endangered wildlife. I thought it was a great story (and still do) but couldn’t find a book publisher who agreed with me. At all events, the assertion that I was not working on In vivo veritas is baloney just like the two preceding ones. I won’t go into the other important issues raised by this poster, to wit, the number of keys to the McCune Room and the sinister significance of my ex-wife’s pasta machine, on the grounds that they are irrelevant and silly.
Yours,
Gareth

| Today's Email from Penn: Belated thanks for the update on the Twitter posting. Over the past 40 years, any number of people have created bogus Zodiac communications, including letters and phone calls. It has become a cottage industry.
On another note, here is the fifth puzzle, which might also be called the supreme puzzle. Pass it along if you like.

Thanks for the info Foreigner. I'm sure you all saw the hidden stuff in the videos. I was mostly referring to the wedding photo followed by the Zodiac watch in this video: https://www.youtube.com/user/myfinalgame#p/u/3/aQz3VRa04MI If all of this is a joke, I simply don't understand it. |

If all of this is a joke, I simply don't understand it. I think the videos are all obviously fakes. The purpose of the wedding cake photo is that the guy cutting the cake looks like the Zodiac sketch. Funny he shows the guys face but blurred out the woman's face. I think if you looked all over the net(if you had time) you would find that same photo floating around. I actually am quite surprised that people still pay attention to these videos, as it is pretty obvious that he is a fraud.

| That is Paul Stine's wedding picture with his wife's face blocked out, and whoever is doing these videos got that from Voigt's site (as Voigt posted the pic with her face blocked out), as he posted a whole bunch of personal Stine family photos on his site for no reason whatsoever.
I am completely disgusted. |

I am completely disgusted. I think it was very nice to see some of Paul Stine's photos. Before those pictures were posted, I could only picture Paul from that one straight on supposed morgue photo. |

| Sent some more questions off to Penn per the posters requests: ******************************************************** QUESTIONS FOR MR. PENN:
1) You have provided much indirect evidence that you lived at 1708 Lincoln Street in Berkeley , Ca. during 1970. Please provide direct documentation that you yourself -- and not your wife -- lived at 1708 Lincoln Street in Berkeley , Ca. from the period approximately June 1969-June 1970. Documents from 1970 and long digressions about Calico cats don't count.
2) You have claimed that you learned of the Zodiac Killer in roughly 1980, from your father Hugh. But your own professors and co-workers from a much earlier time, ca 1968-72, dispute that account. Here are a few examples: ca 1970-72
"For several years, Gareth was fascinated by the Zodiac Killer, trying to decipher the messages of this anonymous criminal," said Fritz Tubach, one of your Berkeley German professors. "To this day the crime has not been solved."
This from one of your former supervisors, Julie Stratton, ca 1975
"During part of the time Gareth Penn worked for the City of Vallejo, he was assigned to the Springstowne Library, a tiny (2700 sq. ft.) facility. At Springstowne he indulged himself with mental padoodlings. He was obsessed with the Zodiac case. Management at the library was annoyed with him for writing Times 17 on their time." 3) The manila envelope with the material about the dispute over the pasta maker has a hard to make out address label to Trinity Avenue. Does that ring any bells?

| Answers from Gareth Penn: ****************************************************************** http://www.co.solano.ca.us/civica/filebank/blobdload.asp?BlobID=3388These minutes of the Solano County Board of Supervisors include a resolution thanking Julie Stratton upon her retirement in 2004. As you can see, her title after 34 years was Senior Library Assistant. The assertion that she was my supervisor is indicative of the quality of the disinformation circulating on the Internet; it's a swirling mass of garbled factoids. In any event, the assertion that I wrote TIMES 17 in the 1970s is just as false as the assertion that Julie was my supervisor. | |

| Email from Gareth Penn. Answers to questions. Attachments to follow ( Azazel... need your help :-) ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ Attached are the title page of the Pacific Telephone Oakland reverse telephone directory published in February 1970 and the page with my name listed on it at the 1708 Lincoln Street address. NB: the listing is in my name, not my wife's, and inclusion in that issue means that I was living there prior to publication, i.e. some time before February of that year. May I ask a return question? If I wasn't living at 1708 Lincoln Street in 1969-1970, where was I living? Can you produce any documentation on another address, and if not, why not? As to my "former supervisor" Julie Stratton, Julie was my assistant at Springstowne; I supervised her, or tried to, anyway. She was subprofessional, i.e. did not have an MLS, and so had to perform library services for patrons under the supervision of someone who did, and in 1974-1975, that was yours truly. | |

| Today's Email from Gareth Penn. **************************** In 1977-1978, I was working on a book on Ted Walker and the California gray whale. In order to do so, I requested to be put on half time by my employer, Solano County Library, and spent six months in that status until I was involuntarily returned to full-time status. My supervisor, Joyce Crooks, was upset about the arrangement because she was short-handed and was not able to hire a half-time employee to make up for the time I had vacated. Recently, this situation has morphed into a poppycock story about how I was working on TIMES 17 and my employer was upset because I was working on the book on company time. I don't know why this is an issue, but whatever the reason, here is some documentary evidence, namely my W-2 forms for 1977 and 1978. I started working on the whale book in 1977, following a whale-watching trip to Baja California that I had taken with H&M Landing of San Diego in February of that year. The six months during which I worked half time were in the second half of 1977. My gross pay from Solano County in 1977 was $10794.83, and in the following year, after I was restored to full time, it was $14331.02. If your pay is constant over two years and you work half time for six months of one of those years, your total pay for that year will be three-quarters of that in the other year. My pay for 1977 is just that (10794.83/14331.02 = 0.753). The reason for any discontent on the part of my supervisor was not that I was writing on company time but that I was working at my job only half time. | |
