Unconfirmed Zodiac letter.

Possible clues of "CANCER" and:

"Action Guide Want Zodiac Birds Fly South Hidden Watch FLT 555 Magic Amulet".

The FBI thought "FLT 555" meant "Flight 555".

Haven't seen this message in a long time, thanks for posting AK.

It could have also been a non Zodiac related coded message to contact someone in the hope the message would be printed on the front page of a newspaper due to Zodiac's notoriety:

For example:

"CANCER"
"Action Guide Want Zodiac Birds Fly South Hidden Watch FLT 555 Magic Amulet".

Read backwards, every second word counts:

Amulet 555 (agent's name?) Watch South, Birds want Action.

Meaning,
Agent555, keep an eye on the South region/event in the South. The bosses want to see some actions/ eliminations..

or

Now is the time for the hit in the South (assassination?)

Interesting, but it was thought to probably be from Zodiac, there just wasn't handwriting to confirm it.

The FBI thought it might be a threat to bomb a Flight 555.

I think there was an unconfirmed report that there was a United Flight 555 from San Francisco to San Diego daily at the time and thus thought by some to be a clue to possible Z murders in southern California - such as Swindles (SD), Domingos and Edwards (SB) and/or Bates (Riverside).

I wonder what led them to believe it was Zodiac without handwriting samples? Any weirdo could have done it. There had to be something more. ??

Great posts guys! I havent seen that in a long time. That ties in to the 1964 Double Murder of the Swindles I believe down in San Diego. If I remember correctly,Howard Davis researched and found out that there was a cheap daily flight 555 from San Fran to San Diego, or something like that, I cant remember exactly. Not to get too far off topic, but I saw the term MAGIC AMULET on the pasteup, and wanted to know what that means. I found this:

Other items of possible interest:

* On Nov.15, 1979 the Unabomber but a bomb on Flight 444 out of Chicago to DC. But the bomb was in US Mail, and thus it is unlikely the bomber knew or intended it would be on that specific flight, though if he watched the airport it is possible.

* Zodiac picked Mt. Diablo as the center for his Phillips 66 Map Code, and "Diablo" means "Devil" in Spanish. And the number of the Devil is 666.

* "Magic Amulet" - This term was used in the Ring cycle operas of Richard Wagner. Also, the Germanic Norse tribes had magic amulets, including wooden clubs they called Hercules clubs, that they used to kill their enemies.

* The combination of "birds fly south" with the "FLT 555" does seem to be a clue of some kind to San Diego in particular and/or Southern California in general.

* I never had any idea what the "Cancer" reference could mean, but the fact that Mr. Swindle was a Cancer in astrology is interesting.

Did you know that 555 is the phone number prefix reserved by the Bell Company for fictitious usage? Just a different angle.

Serioiusly, I'm certain that 555 refers to the flight from San Diego to Mexico.

I think the United Flight 555 was from San Francisco to San Diego.

I have always wanted to see the text of the letter with the line "I just want to tell you this state is in trouble", that letter also has the word "government", so it seems there is some kind of political message in it.

Graysmith Says that Zodiac wrote a letter about a horoscope for LEO not CANCER. Is this a mistake by Graysmith, or did Z write two letters for two different signs??

Yes I am a little confused...in the one photo it shows the word CANCER circled. But the FBI report page 42 posted here ,says LEO....two different horoscopes??

I use to buy these all the time , I am a Leo Born in August. I remember them as being about 3X 5 very small books.
They were found in places like grocery stores near the check out stands. There is a pretty good chance I have one of them in a box someplace. Its a million to one chance though ,that it would be a 1969 book. Leona Roberts was killed on the day that this page from the book was sent. We need to check and see if she was a Leo, or a Cancer, also Elaine Davis Dec.1 69. Most of his clues pertained to murders about to happen or took place prior.

Z (if it truly was Z) seemed to be indicating that he had been down to southern CA by his clues, BIRDS FLY SOUTH, FLIGHT 555 TO SAN DIEGO.....and keep in mind, this was before Cheri Jo Bates link was ever made. So I dont know if the Leona Roberts & Elaine Davis stuff is important, but I did check and Leona Roberts B-day was 8, Jan 1953(capricon), and Elaine Davis 22, Sep 1952 (Virgo)

You are right, I called them "cards" and actually they are pages torn from the astrology books you describe. My mistake.

The Roberts thing is interesting - these letters and pages were, I think, postmarked Fairfield, CA. Could someone have killed Roberts and made it to Fairfield, CA to have them postmarked that day? Or vice versa - had them postmarked in Fairfield, CA then killed Roberts?

I think your discovery that Mr. Swindle was born on July 4 and thus is a Cancer is worth noting, in the context that the page with Cancer on it also has clues that perhaps point to San Diego.

Also, less than two weeks before these letters and pages are sent, on November 28, 1969, Betsy Aardsma was killed at the Penn State library, in circumstances and with an MO matching the Bates campus library murder. Betsy Aardsma was born on July 11, and thus is also a Cancer. But I can't really relate any of the possible clues to her - if it had said "birds fly east" that would be a different story.

And I can't relate the "magic amulet" clue to the Swindles, Aardsma or anyone else. There is a magic amulet in Wagner, and the Germanic Norse tribes used clubs as magic amulets, they called them Hercules clubs, they were made of wood to beat your enemies to death with.
