| From RG book there was reports that a vehicle was following three different ladies in vehicles the one night shortly before Kathleen Johns incident. LE found him and he said he was lost and they escorted him out of town. Does anyone know anything from this ?

| Think the young person that they stopped said he was originally from Vallejo and lost. | |

| This is what I was talking about and wonder if the police ever took down his real name and put it in the report ? Sunday, March 15, 1970 3-4 a.m. - In Santa Rosa, a man frightened three separate women motorist in an identical manner. 5:10 a.m. - The police stopped a man whose auto and license number matched their descriptions. He was identified as a Vallejo resident in a "1962-64 white Chevrolet." The man, "about 23," was stopped after he had followed a woman right into the post office parking lot. He claimed that he was lost and looking for a way out of town. The police let the man go and escorted him out of town. Tuesday, March 17, 1970 A Vallejo woman was on her way to Travis Air Force Base when a white Chevrolet began to tailgate her. The driver kept looking at her and then began "blinking lights, banging his horn" and tried to get her to stop. She raced ahead and was eventually able to outdistance the car. Sunday, March 22, 1970 7 p.m. - Mrs. Kathleen Johns left her home in San Bernardino with her 10-month-old daughter Jennifer for the trip to Petaluma where her mother lived. She drove north on I-5 and onto Highway 99 just before Bakersfield, through Fresno, Merced and Modesto, where she swung left onto Highway 132, a rarely used road. In her rearview mirror she noticed a car she seemed to have picked up on her tail in Modesto. She later recalled that it was "junky" and wasn't as new as a '68 model. http://www.carpenoctem.tv/zodiac/johns.html | |

| Sorry Stitch, that this thread never got a reply. I think this is a very good question, and I hope there is a report out there with this guy's name in it. I personally think that there is a good possibility that Cheri Jo Bates' killer was about her age, and went to school with her, or maybe a year or two older. And for this man lost from Vallejo, following these women, and age 23, that puts him at the right age to have known Cheri Jo. I would love to know this man's name. | |

No Problem Morf and yes the points that you bring up I also would really like to know this mans name. Thing is was there a police report ever made of the incident ? Would any of the officers if still living remember the incident and possibly the mans name ?

From my experience, most old police reports from 40 years ago, unless they involve a very serious crime (murder for one)are destroyed or discarded.

| I am not sure...guess if banks may keep their documents for at least 10 years, state and police stations might archive their documents forever - especially in police issues (as someone could do the same crime he did when he was young thirty years later or so). I guess they at least have to keep their documents archived for at least 30 years, no?

| There does not seem to be a set time for how long departments keep reports. A lot of times things get tossed when they run out of room for places to put files. Other times when a department moves to a new building the older things like misdemeanors, traffic tickets, and crimes where the statute of limitations has run out etc. get tossed. They usually do keep unsolved murders and major crimes. Car stalking would probably be considered minor. As far as Sonoma County is concerned, last year there was article in the Press Democrat about a 1971 case of a missing 17 year old girl where the sheriff's department was asking for the public's help in locating any information about her. They did not know if the case had been resolved, was still open or anything as they could find no records except for an old newspaper article. You can read that article at my site- http://www.santarosahitchhikermurders.com/2011_press-democrat_article_2.html | |
