Sims Homicide Empty
PostSubject: Sims Homicide   Sims Homicide EmptySun Sep 12, 2010 3:58 pm

This took place in Florida. Though it was more like a home invasion, the methodology reminded me of Z.

"Sims Homicide, October 22, 1966

Leon County Sheriff Larry Campbell was the first deputy on the scene 31 years ago on October 22, 1966. At approximately 11 p.m., Dr. Robert W. Sims, 42; and his daughter Joy, 12; were found dead. Helen Sims, 37, was gravely wounded by two gunshots to the head. The older Sims daughters, Virginia, 17; and Judy, 15, were not at home; both were baby-sitting. Joy Sims had been gagged with a stocking and tied up. Her mother was found on the floor; both parents also were tightly bound. Dr. Sims was killed with one bullet to the head; Joy had been stabbed seven times in the chest and abdomen. Mrs. Sims, who had been shot twice in the head and once in the leg, died later at the hospital.

Officers gathering evidence found nearly 1,000 latent fingerprints. There was no sign of forced entry; however, the door lock might have been faulty. The absence of any struggle hints that the victims may have known their killer. More than one killer may have committed the murders. There was no evidence of a struggle in the home, and it would have been difficult for one person to subdue two adults and a child alone.

Anyone who might have information that would help solve this case is urged to contact the Leon County Sheriff's Office, (850)922-3300.

AK - Wow that is amazing. Never heard of this case.

It has incredible similarities to the September 25/27, 1966 home invasion murder of the Bricca family in Cincinnati, Ohio and the September 19, 1966 home invasion murder of Valerie Percy in Kenilworth, Illinois.

Background info on the murder of Valerie Percy, daughter of former Bell & Howell CEO and Republican Senator Charles Percy, on September 18, 1966, in the Chicago suburb of Kenilworth, Illinois. A brutal home invasion murder by knife and blunt hammer like object.

http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/notorious_murders/famous/valerie_percy/index.html

Background info on a case possibly related to the Percy murder, happened just a week later and four hours away, September 25 -27, 1966, in the Cincinnati suburbs, brutal home invasion murder of Monsanto chemical engineer and father Jerry Bricca, mother Linda Bricca and daughter Debbie Bricca, all bound and fatally stabbed.

http://www.cincinnatimagazine.com/article.aspx?id=47780

If you or anyone else find out anything more about this murder of the Sims family, please PM it to me or just post it here.

Look at this map - A is Kenilworth, IL scene of 9/19/66 Murder of Valerie Percy
B is Cincinnati, OH scene of 9/27/66 Murder of Bricca Family
C is Leon County, FL scene of 10/22/66 Murder of Sims Family

Just like the Sims, I can tell you the Bricca family was bound and gagged with stockings and socks.

Percy, Bricca and Sims could be three seperate offenders, but it seems wise not to rule out it could be the same offender(s).

Forty years later, a triple murder still haunts Tallahassee
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published November 12, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ADVERTISEMENT
TALLAHASSEE - For those who lived in Tallahassee then, 1966 is still remembered as the year that changed everything.

That was the year once-open doors were locked, the pastor of one of the city's largest churches became a murder suspect and an entire lake was drained for evidence. Halloween was nearly canceled.

Women filled water guns with ammonia to better fight off an attacker. Children were kept home at night. And police wandered the streets with German shepherds, looking for the killers who hog-tied and savagely murdered a family.

Forty years ago on Oct. 22, while many residents were watching Florida State University and Mississippi State play football, someone attacked Robert Sims, his wife, Helen, and their daughter in their modest brick house on a cul-de-sac.

All three were bound, their mouths stuffed with stockings. The two adults were blindfolded. Robert Sims, 42, a top official with the state Education Department, was shot in the head. Helen Sims, 34, was shot twice in the head and once in the leg. Joy, 12, was stabbed six times, then shot in the head. Her panties were found pulled down, and there was evidence that she was molested.

Their bodies were discovered by Joy's older sister, who with another sibling had been babysitting for families who went to the football game. Robert Sims and Joy Sims died at the scene. Helen Sims lay in a coma for nine days before dying.

"I've seen some terrible things in 45-plus years of law enforcement," said Leon County Sheriff Larry Campbell, who was a 24-year-old deputy on duty that night. "But I can see Joy's eyes as clear today as I sit here talking to you."

More than 40 years later, the savage murders of the Sims family remain officially unsolved despite a massive investigation that has been reopened several times over the years. Campbell has two prime suspects, including one person he says has a fondness for necrophilia. But he says there's not enough evidence for a conviction.

The impact of the crime in this town remains. While many people outside Tallahassee know about the brutal killings at an FSU sorority house by serial killer Ted Bundy in 1978, longtime residents point to the Sims murders as the moment when Tallahassee lost its innocence.

"We just woke up one morning in Tallahassee and we were part of an evil world," said Rocky Bevis, who was 16 at the time and was one of the first at the crime scene because his father ran a funeral home and ambulance service. "It's disturbing to go to sleep knowing someone is still out there."

The killings prompted a frenzy that seized the entire county - which had fewer than 100,000 residents at the time - and reverberated in the corridors of the Capitol, where Gov. Haydon Burns had state government kick in $5,000 in reward money for any evidence.

As word spread the Sunday following the killings, there was a run on hardware stores as Tallahassee residents bought guns, knives and locks, and women signed up for judo classes.

City officials set up a "prowler squad" of officers with dogs to patrol streets at night.

"I was so scared, I didn't let the kids out to play," said Kalliopi Joanos, now 71, who still lives in the house that backs up to the Sims' home.

Fueling the near hysteria was the admission by police that they had "no significant clues, no leads and no motives." There was no forced entry, no signs of robbery or even a struggle. While investigators poured over the crime scene and lifted nearly 1,000 fingerprints, there was nothing that led them to the killers. The murder weapons were never found.

"It would lead you to believe it was pretty well thought out," said Bevis, who helped his father cut the ropes that bound the victims. "It wasn't something spur of the moment where someone said 'Let's go kill three people.' "

Police combed through a thatch of woods behind the Sims house and eventually made the decision to drain a small lake that sat at the bottom of a hill a few hundred yards away. But a search of the muck bottom turned up nothing. A call to other law-enforcement agencies led one Kansas detective to tell Leon County authorities about the eerie similarities to the murder of the Clutter family - the topic of In Cold Blood, the Truman Capote book published a year earlier.

The lack of success fed wild rumors and cast a cloud of suspicion over one man: C.A. Roberts, pastor of the First Baptist Church, one of the city's oldest and most prestigious churches. Helen Sims had worked as a church secretary and her family was deeply involved with the church.

Investigators probed deeply into Roberts' comings and goings and into his interactions with parishioners.

Roberts, however, had an alibi: As team chaplain, he was at the FSU football game - a fact verified by investigators who scanned the game film.

Roberts was killed years later in a traffic accident. The probing into his life prompted him to step down as pastor within months of the murders.

Henry Cabbage, a local writer who is working on a book on the murders, obtained a video showing Campbell and another detective interrogating a woman in 1987. The woman, who now lives in Jacksonville, had a boyfriend who lived near the Sims family. A summary of the interviews says that she remembers going to the Sims' house that night but can't remember any details.

The woman's boyfriend, whom she later married and then divorced, told detectives in 1989 that he had nothing to do with the murders. The man, who now lives in St. Petersburg, theorized that "gangsters" killed the family.

Campbell concedes that barring a confession the murder will remain unsolved.

"I've done everything I think I can do," he said. "The big frustration is that I feel very confident that I know who did it."

Thanks for the links! They're very informative. In regards to the murder of Valerie Percy, I haven't ever heard of it to be honest, but I did notice something interesting from the link you gave me...

This picture reminds me of the police sketches of Z TBH, the jawline and desciption ring alarm bells for me, but then again I could be wrong.

Also, the way she was left by the killer (even though he left in a hurry) reminds me of the Domingos & Edwards double murder. Miss Percy had her nightgown pulled up in a very revealing manner, and Miss Edwards was laid on top of Mr. Domingos with her swimsuit cut open in the same revealing way. The mother also walked in on the killer shining a torch on the body. I know that most people would carry a torch at night, but it reminded me of Z significantly.

What else is interesting is that the police found a pocket watch at the Percy property, though it wasn't determined to have been left by the killer without a doubt. Not much more than a month later, Miss Bates was murdered in a similar fashion, and a watch was recovered from the crime scene.

In regards to the Bricca family, there are a few similarities there aswell, in my opinion, though that seem to be coincidental. I think it was Miss Bates who wanted to be an Airline Stewardess, which was Mrs Bricca's profession. Mr and Mrs Bricca met in Seattle (which is in Washington?) which was only one state over from California, though Mr Bricca had spent a great deal of time in San Francisco.

All of this is circumstantial, but interesting nonetheless. As I said, I've barely scratched the surface on these cases, but I figured getting my thoughts out there couldnt be a bad thing =)

You should also check out:

https://zodiackillersite.forummotion.com/ted-kaczynski-f26/valerie-percy-september-18-1966-a-murder-in-ted-kaczynski-s-neighborhood-t36.htm

It has some info specific to my POI, but also a lot more general info on the case.

The watch aspect is interesting - a person could leave a watch as a false clue regarding time, or as a message, or by accident.

I never connected the fact that Cheri Bates wanted to be a stewardess, and I think had made some contacts along those lines.

What is "Z TBH"?

Yes by "torch" you mean flashlight, and yes, Zodiac used one at 7/4/69 and said he did at 12/20/68.

YES I HAVE ALSO THOUGHT THERE IS A BASIC SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE PERCY/BRICCA SUSPECT, "SANDY" THE POSSIBLE 1963 SANTA BARBARA SUSPECT AND THE ZODIAC SKETCH FROM SF 1969

SUSPECT SKETCHES

Haha, yes I meant "flashlight", we call it a torch over here. By 'Z' I mean 'Zodiac', and by "TBH" I meant "to be honest'- I was feeling a little lazy haha.

Something I've found interesting is that Mrs Bricca was not raped, and was stabbed only eight times, whereas the husband was stabbed nine. In the case of the Zodiac, the females victims are usually stabbed more than the males, if stabbed at all. Something else interesting, is that whoever killed the Bricca's was supposedly left handed, and in my opinion, Z was also left-handed. Mainly because I read somewhere that he kept his knife or weapon on the right side of him, making it easiest to remove with a left hand.

Alsoooo, the bit in that article about Mrs Bricca being friends with Miss Percy? If that's true then wow. Has anyone been able to find out when the two might've seen each other last? Or the how often they'd seen each other in say, the year before Miss Percy's death? If we could narrow that down, I bet we find the thread that links all the murders together. If Z did commit these murders, and also the others who have been found, there would definately be a common denominator between most victims.

Oh! The clocks... do we know if any others were involved with the other murders? They might not have been left at the scene, but maybe they had been tampered with nearby or stolen from the victims?

EDIT: I just saw this as well.

Quote :
Caudell says Linda once mentioned helping to “break up a drug ring” during her time as a stewardess, but she can’t recall any other details.

This is also more than likely a coincidence, but hadn't David Faraday supposedly been involved in something similar before his death? I read that the Police had been investigating that lead up until the letter from the Zodiac.

The friend of Linda Bricca, she went to stewardess school with her, was brutally murdered earlier that same year.

Because of location and timing, Ted Bundy is considered by some as a suspect in that murder (though he denied it) and therefor Bundy is also thought to be considered a suspect by some in the Bricca case.

Interesting then that the Sims murder takes place near Tallahasse, Florida. When he was on the run, Bundy went there and did his last crimes there. People wondered why as he had no known connection to North Florida.

Aside from Ted Bundy, my POI's family home was minutes from the Percy home.

Also mentioned as suspects in the Percy murder were political enemies of Mr. Percy and a professional mafia connected home burglary crew.

Mr. Percy, Mr. Bricca, as well as the fathers of Cheri Bates and Joan Webster, all worked for high tech companies, at least three of the four with defense contracts.

Notice also how the cities of the Bricca slaying and the Sims slaying line up - a straight shot down the freeway.

A=Percy, B=Bricca, C=Sims

Dr. Sims was a government official for the State Education Department, and apparently a top computer expert.

Charles Percy was the Republican nominee for US Senate, and CEO of the high tech company Bell & Howell, that made camera's and business machines.

Mr. Bricca worked for the high tech chemical company Monsanto.

The older Sims girl looks somewhat like Cheri Jo Bates, and the younger one (who was murdered) has the same hair style as Valerie Percy.

The Sims family being bound with stockings, mens ties and socks in their mouth matches exactly with what a detective told me was done to the Bricca family.

The father of Cheri Jo Bates worked at the Naval Weapons Facility.

Also, the Bricca Family murder was husband-wife-young daughter. Sims Family murder was husband-wife-youngest daughter. Both were brutal overkill stabbings, as was Percy murder, gunshots also in Sims case.

This and for some reason Mr Boles' ( Boles murders) South African employment at Hughes' comes to mind..and we have a conundrum of murders high tech background. Is this a coincidence?
