Mona Jean Gallegos was murdered in the San Bernardino/Riverside area in the mid 1970's. Her name has been mentioned as a possible Zodiac victim, and if I recall correctly, she is even listed in the yellow book as a possible victim.
Here are the details:
*June 19, 1975, Mona Jean Gallegos, of Covina, is driving from the town of Albambra on the San Bernardino Freeway. Her car was found in El Monte on the east bound lane of the San Bernardino Freeway near the Santa Anita off ramp. The car was out of gas. Although there were several distress call/emergency boxes on the highway, no call was made about her car trouble. ALso, there was an all night service station closeby. Police theorize that a 'good samaritan' may have offered to help her, and given her a ride.
*Later that night, her Mother's phone rings. After she answers the phone, there seems to be nobody on the other end
*Police look all over, and news articles are published in hopes that clues can be found. (i will post articles as time permits)
*No clues are found until December 1975, when two boys discover her bones in Riverside. She is identified thru dental records. There are no clothes with her body, and police do not gain many clues from her body.
I would like to see if anyone has any additional info on this case. There are not alot of details. I think her case is mentioned as a possible Zodiac case due to the location and the car trouble angle. But she was found with no clothes, which may indicate sexual assault (not Zodiac-like).
I am in the process of trying to get more details from her Sister. Her Sister is the person that indicated that her Mom had received the weird call the night she vanished, and I hope she can give us anything at all to work with.
On the surface, it seems like a simple case of her running out of gas in the wrong time at the wrong place. But, if you compare her case to that of Cindy Lee Mellin, there mya be more below the surface. It seemed like Cindy simply had a flat tire, but close examination revealed that her tire had been delibertaley punctured, and that makes me wonder if police examined the gas tank on Mona's car.
There is a good possiblity that ZOdiac was active in southern CA in the early to late 60's, then moved to the bay area and was active from the late 60's to mid 70's before he vanished. Could he have returned to souther CA for whatever reason?
