Crime Victim, Deana Hooper

There was a question posted on another site. A poster was looking for his Aunt, a victim of crime.
The young man was asking for help in any information on his Aunt. In a recent meeting with Lyndon
Lafferty, Sandy & I discussed this case with him and realized it tied into this victim.
A little digging and we were able to tap into more information.
( Newspaper articles enclosed)

Here is the first post by rabbit (on Dennis K's site, looking for help)

Hi Dennis. I have a very specific question. First, I was very excited and intrigued to learn about you on, I believe it was a Discovery show about the Zodiac killer. The amount of research and work you've done is incredible. I have been fascinated for years with serial killers, and in particular the Zodiac killer for personal reasons. It's my understanding that the Zodiac killer may have upwards of 37 victims, many of whom are still unidentified. Before I was born, my aunt Dina was murdered and her body was later found on a hillside in Vallejo. She was 18 when she was murdered, I believe in '71 or '72, perhaps later. She, along with her sister Tana, were adopted by my dad's parents, Dean and Edith Hooper, from a Chinese orphanage after the Korean War. Her murder was never solved, and I, along with my parents, have often wondered if it could have been the Zodiac killer. Both of my dad's parents are now dead, and for whatever reason didn't really pursue finding her killer. Coincidentally, Dean and Edith resided in Aberdeen, WA for many years, up until their death. I have very little information, and I guess I'm just wondering if there is any possibility based on your discussions with Jack or your research that he could have killed Dina. Even though I never met her, I still find her murder to be a very sad tragedy, especially because it's still unsolved. Thank you for any feedback. I know that you are a very busy man. Thank you also for allowing me to be a part of this forum.

VTH 3/13/75
Article Typed out for better reading.
A skeleton found Tuesday in an open field at Columbus Parkways and St.John's Mine ROad was identified tentatively Weds. by Vallejo police as the remains of an 18 year old Chinese girl from Sonoma.
Det. Richard Hoffman said the skeleton is presumed to be that of Deana Hooper who had been reported missing here last July 15 by her sister, Mrs Tonna Albright of 901 Georgia St. with whom she had been staying.
Hoffman said Mrs. Albright made the tentative identification after viewing the clothing and sandals found at the scene of the discovery and recognized them as her sister's. Hoffman said Mrs. Albright also identified the ruby-colored birthstone ring on the right hand as that worn by her sister when she disappeared here nine months ago.
Hoffman said the first clue to the skeletons tentative identification came from Harold Thacker, a retired Vallejo police sergeant and now a criminal investigator to Mare Island.
Hoffman said Thacker supplied the name of the missing Chinese girl after reading yesterdays Times-Herald a count of the discovery of the skeleton. Thacker told Hoffman's he recalled talking to the missing girl's father at Mare Island when he made inquiries at the shipyard after his daughter reportedly last had been seen there.
Hoffman siad a check of Police Department records uncovered a missing persons report involving Deana Hooper which had been filed by her siste in Vallejo. Police immediately contacted the sister with the result the first sad to the skeletons' identity was developed.
Hoffman said confirmations of the identification rests with an examinations of the Sonoma's girl's dental charts which have been released by a Napa Dentist for checking with he skeleton's teeth.
According to the missing person's report filed last July by Mrs. Albright, Hoffman said her sister last had been seen on July 11 at the Enlisted Men's CLub on Mare Island.
Hoffman said Mrs. Albright gave no reason reason for delaying the report of her sister's disappearance until July 15th.
Hoffman said Deana Hooper and Tonna Albright had been adopted about eight years ago from an orphanage in Hong Kong by their foster father Dean Hooper a Caucasian ex-seviceman who now lives at 234 Thonison (?) Ave. Sonoma.
Hoffman said her notified Hooper that the skeleton found here had been tentatively identified as his missing adopted daughter. According to Hoffman, Hooper confirmed he had suspected all along that Deana was dad after she disappeared with a trace last July and that Mrs. Albright confirmation of the identifications of the skeleton came as no surprise to him.
Hoffman said it is his belief the skeletons found Tuesday by an Oakland chiropractor and his 8 year one son flying kites an the Azevedo Ranch had lain in the fired undetected since last July 12.
He indicated the location of the skeleton in high weeds 40 feet east of the neatest roadway would have made it virtually impossible for someone to see the remains unless a passerby stumbled by accident on that site.
Hoffman said the skeleton now is being examined by an anthropologist at the University of California at Davis in hope of determine the cause of the death .
Meanwhile, he said the police investigation into the girls' disappearance and data is continuing.

PostSubject: Sandy beaches...   Mon Feb 27, 2012 8:34 pm

...please somebody wipe out the sand out of my eyes:

- A guy called 'Sandy' was and still is urgently searched in the Domingos/Edwards case, with heavily rimmed glasses
- Zodiac sent a postcard with a 'Sandy Beaches' comment on it
- Deana Hooper got lost from the 'Enlisted Men´s Club' (equal to or near an Officer Club), which is only about 200 ft. away from 'Sandy Beach Road'
- On page 23 of Vallejo police report for case no. 243 146 (Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin, 1969) a witness/person of interest gave his address as '20, Sandy Beach Road'...

A photo impression of the 'Enlisted Men´s Club', no direct connection to the case:

Sandy, do you still live at 20, Sandy Beach Road?

Your welcome, glad I'm not a typist for a living. I type real fast...but did make a couple
small typo's. I will be posting pictures also. This crime scene is St. John's Mine Road and
Columbus Parkway. St. John's Mine Road is a private road....but we had permission to go up
the road yesterday afternoon! It is beautiful open space, with some old ranches and houses.
The Swett Family lived there and Azezedo Family Ranch in the late 60's, early 70's.
If the kite flyers kite didn't fall on the spot, this victim would still be missing. I will be posting
a picture of the spot that we feel the victim was found. Thanks to Lyndon Lafferty for inviting Sandy
and myself on a great field trip. We both took pictures so more to follow.

This is one picture....further up the Private Road.

Never heard of that one. Must be one of the questionable communiques.

Not feeling this as a Zodiac crime, but thanks for posting. Of course most of us are familiar with Officer Hoffman---him being first on the scene at BRS and in the ambulance with Darlene. I wonder what his take on this is today?

In September 1990 'Zodiac' sent a card we call Celebrity Cypher or the Oakland Card. It has a code and the postcard itself has a comment about 'sandy beaches' and a picture of a beach.

So, am I understanding this right? The skeleton was found in an area near, what would have once been, the Swett Ranch?

Excerpt from Roxietoday's post.

We lived at the time of the murders off columbus park way, at that time known as sweat ranch. We had a dirt road that went to the old water tower and both crime scenes. (by the way the line that hits behind the crime scene at blue rock springs, exactly hits my house). He also lived in a second house, after we left he and his son moved to another house on sweat ranch where his girlfreind killed herself with his deputy issued gun , gosh with her daughter( 1year) in the next room . they said it was a tragic accident. I thank god that we were never a tragic accident

Link to forum about the POI that the above refers to.

Thank you Ak, people do forget certain things because there is so much to remember.
This young girl wasn't parked at a lovers lane with a boy, so some people might not see any connection to Zodiac.
Paul Stine wouldn't be considered a Zodiac victim either, if it wasn't for the letter and bloody shirt .

Here we have a young very pretty 18 yr old girl hanging out in Zodiac's trolling area, during the Z time.
The killer puts the body near a road close to K. John's name. Perhaps it is a coincidence that Darlene's daughter "Dena" had a name like the Victim. It is close to a water tower that over looks Blue Rock Springs, where we know he was on July 4th 69. This girl is killed in the month of July 74. Serial killers enjoy putting there victims in areas close to each other.
This screams Zodiac I think.
Zodiac claimed he had 37 victims Jan 74 could Deana be his 38th ?

Yes Traveller1st, She was found 100 feet in to the north side of Columbus Parkway and 40 feet to the right of St Johns road. Zam and I saw the water tower that overlooks Blue Rock Springs , we found that pretty interesting to say the least.
Thank you for the link.
It looked to me that the killer dragged her body to the tall weeds from Columbus Parkway and not from St Johns rd., because of the wire fence along St Johns rd., and the position of the body.
Hoffman felt it looked like a sex crime, because the shirt was pulled up towards the head. But if she was dragged by her feet, the shirt could pull up in that direction. The pants were obviously removed, but that could have been done to humiliate .
I saw a body of a young woman killed on Easter Sunday 1988 , her blouse was pulled up to her neck to expose her breasts, her skirt was also pulled up for futher humiliation. If one didn't know better , it would appear that she was raped. She was not raped, just posed to shock whom ever found her.
THis may or may not be the case in Deana Hooper's

I think this is him:

Las Vegas
Charles A. (Art Lindsey
August 28, 1935 - April 12, 2005
Art was born in Elreno, Oklahoma and passed away in Las Vegas on Tuesday, April
12, 2005. He attended Stockton Grammar Schools, Lodi High School, Willows High
School and Graduated from Hayward High School before serving 4 years in the US
Air Force. After the Air Force he worked in construction through out California
and retired as custodian of Saint Johns Presbyterian Church in San Francisco.
Art is survived by his son, ******* Lindsey of Las Vegas; daughter, ******
******* of San Diego; brothers,***** Lindsey of San Diego, ***** Lindsey
of Stockton; step-mother,*** Lindsey of San Diego; companion, ****** ***** of
Las Vegas; numerous nieces and nephews and a great-niece, ***** Lindsey.
At Arts request, no services and a private interment
.

A couple things stand out to me. He worked "construction through out CA" and had relatives in San Diego. My questions are, 1- did he work construction in Riverside 1966(when Bate's School was being worked on),and 2- did he have family in San Diego back when Joyce & Johnny Swindle were killed?

I found a CHUCK LINDSEY living in San Diego in 1959 who worked for WILSHIRE OIL OF CALIFORNIA. If that is him, then that puts him down there around the time of the Swindles murders. Oil refineries near the Lake Herman Crime scene as well as the Domingos/Edwards scene.Maybe this deserves more discussion in a CHUCK LINDSEY suspect thread?

Yes we should check him out, I don't discount anyone until they can be proven not to be Zodiac. Construction work makes sense for a serial killer, to be able to move where ever the work is. Like truck drivers are all over the place, especially cross country. As I have said before, there was construction going on at Riverside , Vallejo, , Lake Tahoe, Santa Barbara, all at the time of each murder.
Chucks girl friends death, is very suspicious. I would like to see a picture of him around 1969, even a school picture is a start ?

Yes Ak that is the correct time line, she was found on Tuesday March 11th 75, 9 months after she was last seen at the Enlisted Men's Club on Mare Island July 11th 74.
The July 8th 74 letter was the last that we know of for 4 years.
If Zodiac was Deana's killer, did he feel some remorse for killing a young innocent girl ? And that kept him quite for that long ?
Thank you for posting that time line, very important for everyone to see .
